Description: Panchayat House, Biruwa Guthi Panchayat. Biruwa Guthi is a small village west of Jitpur, which is on the hardtop road that leads to Birgunj. The house was occupied by two Peace Corps volunteers from October 1966 to May, 1967, and one volunteer continued to live there until August 1968. The sign left front indicates that this house is the panchayat headquarters. The house was one room with a covered front porch; it had clay tiled roof and walls were mixture of clay, dung and straw. The fence was added by the Peace Corps volunteers to keep cattle from eating the straw from the walls of the shed addition to the right of the house, and from eating plants that were planted for demonstration purposes. The wood came from the jungle to the north. The green crop in the background may be sugar cane. The structure to the left, back may be for a milling operation, run by the local cooperative. The picture is taken toward the southwest. Keywords: Bob Nichols, Nepal Photo History Project, Peace Corp Photo History, community, government building, home life, house exterior
