Caption: Date: 1970-1971 Location: Keroun, Morang Description: Progressive farmer Agni Prasad Koirala and his wife uproot rice seedlings from the nursery bed in preparation for transplanting. This farmer tried the IR-8 variety bred at IRRI in the Philippines, which was introduced during the Green Revolution in the late 1960s. In the nursery IR-8 was less flexible than local varieties with respect to the age at which it could be pulled: if it was left too long, some of the roots would sever during pulling and the seedlings would not be usable. However, the much higher yield of IR-8 induced many farmers to use it, either as a cash crop or for making pounded rice.
