Green bricks are being stacked for firing. The process takes place wherever there is good clay for brick-making. One can see the stubble in the field from the previous year's crops. Unfortunately, the process sometimes stopped at this point: the home-builder would run out of money and the pile of fired bricks would bake in the sun and weather in the wind and rain. A brick house was the ultimate sign of financial well-being. Here the bricks have been made from local clay, pressed in moulds, dried in the sun, and then stacked for further drying. The men are carrying the still-green bricks to be stacked in a large mound which will be covered with mud and then fired. When the mound cools, the covering mud layer, now hardened, will be removed to reveal the fired bricks. The girls is the zamindar's daughter, a &amp;quot;hill&amp;quot; Nepali girl. The zamindar's wealth is evident in the &amp;quot;store-bought&amp;quot; clothes she wears and the &amp;quot;easy chair&amp;quot; in which she sits. The chair would have been made by a wandering carpenter from wood provided by the zamindar. That a person would have (or could buy) enough wood--a precious commodity--to have made an item like an easy chair was a sign of real wealth. The flat woven basket in the background would have been used for winnowing wheat or rice from chaff. Step 2 in the marijuana production process. First, the plants were cut and laid out in a row. Now these villagers are pacing back and forth across the plants to flatten them. Next, they will be stacked, one on top of another, in a circular fashion with stems outward, and covered with a blanket (and pressed with an upside-down bed) to cure. After a couple of weeks, they will be uncovered and then brushed to remove loose leaves and the dried buds will be plucked off. Note the men with towels on their heads against the hot sun.
