Date: 1964 Location: Bhojpur Description: Rai woman plays a local version of a mouth harp made from bamboo. The mud splashed on her is because she was engaged in transplanting rice at the time and had been "accidentally" dowsed with mud by her sisters.

Date: 1964 Location: Bhojpur Description: Village women confront a "crazy woman." The scene took place on the "lekh" (high ridge above treeline) on a market day. The woman was apparently a familiar figure (most villages had a few "crazy" people who were generally cared for and tolerated), but from the expressions on the women's faces, her nakedness was not acceptable. In addition, she was acting strangely, quite possibly hallucinating.

Date: 1964 Location: Bhojpur. Bhojpur Description: Rai family consisting of the father (Lal Bahadur), mother, and four children. The fifth, a daughter, is missing. This is a fairly typical village family of the middle hills.

Date: 1963 Location: Bhojpur. Bhojpur Description: Old Rai man with wrinkled face poses for photo. His name was Lal Bahadur Rai, and although he was kin to several prestigious local figures, he himself lived a modest, hard-working peasant's life. He lived near the bazaar with his wife, sister-in-law, three daughters and two sons. He was an impeccably honest and reliable man who became good friends with the Peace Corps volunteers in Bhojpur.

Date: 1964 Location: Bhojpur. Bhojpur Description: Kami (metalworker) man poses. He crafted some of the finest Khukuris in the region. Kamis were among the dalit "untouchable" castes.

Date: 1964 Location: Kulunga, Bhojpur Description: Kulungi Rai man near his village in remote, far northern Bhojpur District. This man was one of the few people in the village who had seen Westerners before. This was an extremely remote area and the people were reputed to be dangerous, although there was no indication that this was the case. The man's clothing is largely, if not entirely, homespun from the local plant source for linen.

Date: 1964 Location: Bhojpur. Bhojpur Description: Young "Kami" (ironsmith) girl poses with nose ring and coin necklace. Bhojpur district was renown for its "khukuris" (the famed curved Gurkha knife), and this girl's father was one of the finest khukuri makers in the village.

Date: 1964 Location: Khumbu, Solukhumbu Description: Sherpa couple pose in their finest clothes. Nga Dorje (woman on left) and Daj Ang Bu (man on right) were proprietors of a small grain mill perched at a small stream crossing at the base of the ridge on which Thyangboche Monastery was located. They posed for the photo for the two Peace Corps volunteers who were staying with them for a week.

Date: 1964 Location: Bhojpur. Bhojpur Description: Sherpa child sits on her mother's lap drinking raksi. It was not unusual for young children to drink raksi, a drink so alcoholic that, undiluted, it burns with a blue flame. Note the very fine hat and coin necklace. Because of their position on the trade routes between Tibet and India, Sherpas were frequently quite wealthy.

Date: 1964 Location: Bhojpur Description: Village girls ride on "Roti Ping" ferris wheel. These devices were erected specially during Tihar and Dashain celebrations in the villages. They would remain up for several weeks and then be taken down.

Date: 1964 Location: Bhojpur. Bhojpur Description: Two Rai women do a traditional village dance. In general, women were reluctant to dance in public like this, and though they were clearly accustomed to dancing and enjoyed doing so, generally only did so as the evening grew late and the raksi (local distilled drink) flowed more freely.

Date: 1964 Location: Bhojpur. Bhojpur Description: A "Lakhe" dances through village street pursued by children. The figure danced to a particular drumbeat, unfamiliar at other times of year. Bum-bum-bum-ba-ba-BUM-ba-BUM-BUM-ba-ba-BUM-ba-ba-BUM-ba-BUM, ending a beat too soon for the ear's expectation. It appeared that this was a rhythm reserved exclusively for the Lakhe. Usually the largest men in the village were chosen, but it was not a sacred choice, as they asked the Peace Corps volunteers (also large) to dress up and dance as Lakhe.

Date: 1964 Location: Bhojpur. Bhojpur Description: Two "Lakhe" representing evil spirits pose. They were, of course, well known villagers dressed up and deliberately acting frightening. This Newar festival was one of the most lively of the year and included a good deal of drinking, especially into the late hours.

Date: 1964-08 Location: Bhojpur, Bhojpur Description: Large brass drums are rolled ceremoniously through the main street of the bazaar as part of the Gai Jatra ceremony, a part of Lakhe Jatra. One of the largest events of the year, it features the "Lakhe," figures dressed in colorful clothing, prancing wildly and scaring children. They are said to represent evil.
