Date: 1965-10 Location: Mustang Description: A welcome sight on the main footpath: a "bhatti" or tea shop. A weary traveler can get sweet, hot Nepali tea here, or, if s/he prefers, a glass of invigorating "raksi" - home distilled spirits. If it's evening the bhatti owner will prepare a meal and the traveler can sleep inside. No five-star hotel was ever more welcoming!

Date: 1964-1965 Location: Yankchowk, Tanahu Description: Major Narbahadur Thapa's wife on the right. She is holding a brass "ancora," a drinking vessel. Yangchowk had no electricity and only well-to-do residents could afford the kerosene, carried by porters from the Terai, used in the lamp to the left.

Once a year Tibetans loaded up their ponies with exotic goods - rugs, blankets, snow leopard skins, yak butter - for sale along the mulbato (main road) through Nepal to India.
