Date: 1974 Location: Kathmandu, Kathmandu Description: Chandra Rajlawat with wife Shanti. Chandra, was a former student of Peace Corps Volunteer Ron Ranson in Chitwan. Chandra tragically died in a Thai Airline crash in Kathmandu, July 31, 1992. There was confusion between the control tower and the pilots as to the proper landing procedure and runway to use; confusion between the pilot and the first officer; and there was a mechanical problem with the plane when it was approaching Kathmandu. The plane overshot the runway and turned the wrong way to do another approach. The plane crashed at about 11,000 feet near Langtang killing all on board. Chandra was a popular forestry student and was attending the University of North Carolina, USA, at the time of his death. The university generously came to the aid of his wife and small children living in North Carolina.

Date: 1973-12 Location: Kathmandu, Kathmandu. Description: Former Peace Corps Volunteer Ron Ranson visits with Mr. Wong, famous for his Chinese food and restaurant, across the street from Peace Corps hostel in Lazimpat. In the 1960s, Mr. Wong would “comp” the first meal of any Peace Corps Volunteer at his restaurant who could complete a meal using ONLY chopsticks - including every grain of rice.
