Caption: Date: 1970-1971 Location: Hile, Dhankuta Description: Improved breed of pig. About five of these were brought to Hile as piglets from the Terai (perhaps from the British army camp in Dharan) by the Peace Corps volunteer who was stationed in Hile. The piglets were brought up by porters who carried them in a doko basket. There were some caste issues about which porters could carry the piglets. This improved breed of pig produced a larger litter (7-9 piglets) relative to the local breed (2-3 piglets). This particular pig was raised behind a shop on the left side of the main street, from the west end of Hile. A good part of its diet was the left over millet seeds from Tongba sold at the shop, some of which may be on the pig's snout in this picture. Woman at right has emptied plates of uneaten food from the shop into a bowl for the pig. A pig this size was unusual and attracted attention.
