Caption: Date: 1968-04 Location: Lukla, Solukhumbu Description: Luka airstrip. Local people greeting the plane, looking for work as porters. Two Peace Corps volunteers in the center, by the plane, with Bill Borsa on the right; the pilot may be just visible to the right of Bill Borsa. The American pilot was a bit of a legend for his flying skill. Ten minutes before landing at Lukla, he asked his passengers to not talk to him. He needed total focus as the airstrip was surrounded by mountains on three sides, and it was a short runway, 1,000 feet or so with a 20% slope. Once he committed to the air strip, he had to land. Just a couple of years later, this pilot was reported as the one who flew at night to take medicine to a seriously ailing King Mahendra who was in Western Nepal.
