Caption: Date: 1966 Location: Thamghas, Gulmi Description: Putting on a slate roof. The slate was mined locally. A family's status was often measured by the type of roof on their dwelling. Thatch being the poorest, then slate, and finally metal. Many observers felt that slate was superior to metal in many ways (less heat build up, not as noisy in the rain, durability, etc.). However, a metal roof was a sign of prestige. Keywords: Carl Hosticka, Nepal Photo History Project, Peace Corp Photo History, building, handicrafts, roofing
