Caption: Date: 1966-1967 Location: Panchakanya, Ilam Description: The meat market area of Aitabare was held at the edge of the village on Sunday market day. The pigs were herded into this area from surrounding villages and killed with a stake to the heart early in the morning. Their blood was drained and kept for consumption. The men used bundles of straw (one is evident just behind the man on the left) lit like torches to scorch the hair, before scraping the pig's hide clean. The pig was butchered and laid out for sale on a bed of fresh ferns. Keywords: Daniel N. Kucij, Nepal Photo History Project, Peace Corp Photo History, agriculture, butchering
