Caption: Date: 1964 Location: Baglung, Baglung Description: Corn stalks that have been cut with bean plants starting to climb up them. View to the north of Dhaulagiri, the seventh highest mountain in the world. This is an example of intensive sustainable farming. Corn and beans are planted together. The corn grows quickly and once harvested of it's cobs, the leaves are then removed for animal fodder. The beans are now able to climb up the corn trellises. Once the beans are harvested the corn stocks are removed to be used as fencing material for keeping chickens. The spent bean residue is rich in nitrogen and is then incorporated into the soil as fertilizer.
