Caption: Date: 1963 Location: Dhulikhel, Kavrepalanchok Description: Workmen clearing rocks from the beginning work on the Arniko Highway (Kathmandu to Lhasa). This portion of the road ran adjacent to the village of Dhulikhel. Until this work began there was only a dirt road from Kathmandu east to Banepa and on to Dhulikhel. These workers are beginning the arduous task of extending the road beyond Dhulikhel to the Nepal border with Tibet. In this initial stage of road building there was no mechanized road building equipment used. All road excavation was done by villagers hired to do the work with hand equipment used to till their fields.
