Caption: Date: 1974 Location: Khumjung, Solukhumbu Description: Ang Rita, a son of Khumjung painter Kappa Kaldhen, at Devuche, a nunnery near Thyangboche Monastery. He is standing outside a private retreat, in which a nun has retreated for three years of isolation, meditation, and prayer. Villagers bring food and deposit it at the little window. After the donor leaves, the nun takes the food and leaves the dishes in the window, where they are picked up by the next donor. Thus she has no human contact for more than three years.
