Tanka Prasad founded the first democratic political party (Praja Parishad) in 1938. After printing and distributing anti-Rana pamphlets, he was caught and imprisoned for life; unlike four of his colleagues, he could not be executed because executing a Brahmin was too great a sin for the Ranas to bear.
