Caption: Date: 1969 Location: Sahartara, Dolpa Description: Villagers gather to listen to tape recordings of the songs they have sung. In the evenings, young men and women have parties where they sing competitively - that is, the boys sing a song they have extemporaneously composed, whereupon the girls then reply with a song designed to defeat the boys' song. The boys then reply to the girls, and so it goes until either people are exhausted or cannot think of an appropriate reply.
