Caption: Date: 1969 Location: Sahartara, Dolpa Description: Lanku and his wife leave the village for a trading trip of several months to the south. Lanku is one of very few villagers in Sahartara who own horses. He rides the horse while his wife, carrying a load walks. The reason for this is that riding a horse is a sinful (papi) activity; women are not supposed to sin in this way, while it is acceptable for men to do so. For the same reason, men use cattle to plow fields, not women, because plowing, causing pain to the bullock, is also sinful.
