Caption: Date: 1968 Location: Birendranagar, Surkhet Description: This is a man from Jumla smoking a sulpa, something almost universally popular in the villages of Western Nepal at that time. It is not visible in the picture, but it was customary to have a damp piece of cloth wrapped around the bottom, and a piece of charcoal in the top to prevent the tobacco from falling through the pipe. In the mountains, many were still using steel, flint, and a cotton like substance to light them. Keywords: John Greer, Nepal Photo History Project, Peace Corp Photo History, People, portrait
