His name was Lal Bahadur Rai, and although he was kin to several prestigious local figures, he himself lived a modest, hard-working peasant's life. He lived near the bazaar with his wife, sister-in-law, three daughters and two sons. He was an impeccably honest and reliable man who became good friends with the Peace Corps volunteers in Bhojpur.
