Date: 1966 Location: Hemaja, Kaski Description: Damaru Raj walking to his school in Hemaja from Pokhara. He and his two brothers had been sent to Benares to be educated. When they returned home to Pokhara, their father had each of them go to a nearby village to start a school. Damaru Raj went to Hemaja about an hour’s walk from his home. In 1956 he began the process of finding students for the school. He spoke with families, urging them to send their children to the school whenever they did not have to work to do. Damaru supplied copy books and pencils and the students had their lessons on the maidan at the north end of the village. Gradually the school formed and by 1965 they had built a stone school with 9 rooms. In 1966 they added an attached shelter for the 10th grade and the school was complete.
