Date: 1971-11 Location: Solukhumbu Description: Geltze Sherpa, age 11, breakfasts at home before setting out with Peace Corps volunteer Chip Letson to the Everest Base Camp area. He offered to carry firewood, etc., on a two-week trip in order to launch his career as a guide and porter. Though underequipped, he served ably and met Everest conqueror Tenzing Norgay on the trail.
