Caption: Date: 1967-10 Location: Namche Bazaar, Solukhumbu Description: Some color is provided in this photo from tarps which were left behind by the American and Swiss expeditions to Everest and were greatly treasured by the Sherpas. Kanchha and Ang Lhakpa Sherpa's house is directly above the tarps the second from the top. At the time there were no expeditions nor any organized trekking and he was working for 6 rupees a day carrying stones up from the river 1500 feet to the building site of the Everest View Hotel. This was not enough money to feed his family and so his wife also had to carry stones. She only received 4 rupees a day. Her mother took care of the young children.
