Description: Kausi Bahadur Rai, porter for 21 day trip from Dhankuta to Everest Base Camp and back, . He was only 4' 10" and so Peace Corps volunteer Peter von Mertens could easily look over the top of his load if he walked behind him on the trail. He was paid 4 rupees a day ( the rate had just inflated from 3 per day that fall and it was Dasain Festival time). Peter provided him with a woolen blanket which he kept as a tip at the end of the trip. Besides being a sturdy porter he was a great cook as they were in many areas where food was scarce.
