Date: 1967 Location: Bharatpur, Chitwan Description: A family of Manang Bhote (Tibeto-Nepali) people; note the evidence of goiter on the woman’s neck, an easily preventable health condition that was common in the Bhote people due to eating insufficient iodine (not added to indigenous salt of the Himalayan region). During the winter months many Bhote families would migrate down to Narayanghat, which was then the end point of the road from India (the bridge over the Narayani River and the East-West and Kathmandu Highways did not yet exist); the men would then continue on to sell medicinal herbs, semi-previous stones and other trade goods as far away as Thailand and Malaysia (perhaps even as far as Hong Kong) while the women and children spent the winter in shelters at the north end of the Narayanghat baazar.
