Date: 1964-1965 Location, Yangchowk, Tanahu Description: A Magar village with homes set close together on a steep hillside about six hours walk from Bandipur. The prominent structure with whitewashed upper floor is home to Major Narbahadur Thapa. Major Thapa served with the Gurkha Engineers in World War Two, during the partition of India and Pakistan - trying to prevent the slaughter of Muslims and Hindus - and in the Malayan Emergency. Major Thapa was also Gurkha Orderly to Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth. Upon retirement he build a clean water system for Yangchowk and served as the village's doctor, administering both allopathic and traditional herbal treatments.
