Date: 1964-12 Location: Narayanghat, Chitwan Description: Peace Corps Volunteer Ron Ranson and his cook, Dal Bahadur Thapa clean up an outdoor latrine (“charpi”). The item being painted is a cover for the latrine hole to keep flies and animals out. A screen, front, below, provides ventilation to the hole and keeps flies and critters out. The walls of the latrine were somewhat porous and made with a woven bamboo mat to provide good ventilation, yet privacy. This latrine was one of the few built among a population of 4,000 in Narayanghat. The landlord, Lal Kumar Shrestha, had it made as an example of a simple latrine that could be built with local and inexpensive materials.
