Bhagya Maya had passed class VII at a different middle school, and then taught for two years at a primary school in her village. The government then imposed a class VIII requirement for primary school teachers, so in 1968, at age sixteen, she enrolled in Viswa Premi School for a year, obtained a class VIII certificate, and resumede teaching at her village primary school.
