Caption: Date: 1971-05 Location: Banni, Bajhang Description: At the Chaitauli Mela. The crowd has gathered to watch the start of a game (known in some places as "murder ball") in which two close villages on the lekh compete against each other. The object is to move a large inflated leather ball across the opposing team's goal line. That's it, no rules. There was so much struggle and violence between the two villages at the 1970 mela, and so much tension leading up to this year's mela, that the village leaders decided to cancel the game at the last minute.
