Caption: Date: 1968-06 Location: Uttarganga, Surkhet Description: View of 435 foot long swinging (cable) bridge over the monsoon-swollen Bheri River. The bridge was constructed in 1964 under the design and supervision of Dal Bir Singh, using local (indigenous) technology (wooden anchors weighed down by tons of rock) and voluntary labor from the surrounding villages. For his accomplishment, Dal Bir Singh (a blacksmith (Kami) with only a third-grade education) received a prize of Rs. 400/- personally delivered to him by King Mahendra when His Majesty visited Surkhet in 1965. The Dailekh District Panchayat subsequently appointed Dal Bir Singh as Sub-Overseer in charge of building similar bridges and village development projects in the district.
