Caption: Date: 1966-1967 Location: Biruwa Guthi, Parsa Description: Vultures eating the carcass of a dead cow. Once a cow dies, its body is devoured by vultures, village dogs and jackals. In 24 hours, nothing of the animal is left but bones. About twice a year, bullock carts come through the villages to pick up the bones and take them to India where they were processed for fertilizer. Vultures could be seen flying high in the sky and far off in the distance. When they began to circle in the sky it was an indication that they were watching an animal close to death. They were huge birds. When they landed, they took several steps before they came to a stop. When they took off they needed a runway. When they ate, it was all business. Their long, naked necks reached far into the carcass. Keywords: Bob Nichols, Nepal Photo History Project, Peace Corp Photo History, agriculture, animal
