Caption: Date: 1970-1971 Location: Sakhuwa Parsauni, Parsa Description: In Shripur, a Tharu village. The girls is the zamindar's daughter, a "hill" Nepali girl. The zamindar's wealth is evident in the "store-bought" clothes she wears and the "easy chair" in which she sits. The chair would have been made by a wandering carpenter from wood provided by the zamindar. That a person would have (or could buy) enough wood--a precious commodity--to have made an item like an easy chair was a sign of real wealth. The flat woven basket in the background would have been used for winnowing wheat or rice from chaff.
